Nakheel opens Deira Islands bridge

January 2017

Nakheel reached a major milestone at Deira Islands with the opening of a Dh150-million ($41 million) access bridge to the project.

The bridge, which links mainland Dubai with Deira Islands, was built as part of Nakheel’s Dh1-billion ($272 million) infrastructure works at the 15.3-sq-km retail waterfront city.

The project included opening the navigational lane beneath the bridge by removing about two million cu m of drilling materials in three landfill areas. Works included extending the existing canal walls up to the new fish market marina in addition to lighting works, sewage, asphalt, shifting and protecting the existing services, and extending services along the bridges.

Following the opening of the bridge, the project contractor will remove the last landfill area to complete works for opening the navigational canal.

Deira Islands will be a world-class hub for tourism, leisure, retail and entertainment. The development is expected to have around 250,000 residents. The project will add 40 km, including 21 km of beachfront, to Dubai’s coastline, and will contain hundreds of new hotels, serviced apartments and mixed-use buildings as well as retail and leisure attractions.

Nakheel is building 16 residential towers, five hotels, two serviced apartment complexes, the 420,000-sq-m Deira Mall, the 5,300-outlet Night Souk and several marinas at the islands.

The infrastructure works in Stage One, covering two of the four islands that make up Deira Islands, was completed last September. Stage Two infrastructure works are under way.
